About Cameron

Cam was born at 38 weeks, but his journey began with a fight for his life. He wasn’t breathing when he was born and had to be resuscitated. He spent his first 14 days in the NICU before finally getting to go home.

For the first two months, things seemed to be going well. Then, his doctors noticed that his head wasn’t growing as it should. What followed was a series of tests to determine why his head was smaller than expected. During this process, doctors discovered seven white spots on his brain. After further testing, we finally received an answer: Cam had CHAMP1 – an extremely rare genetic condition.

At just five months old, Cam became the 65th child in the world to be diagnosed with CHAMP1 and was the youngest known child diagnosed at that time.

Receiving his diagnosis was the beginning of a journey I never could have imagined. I immediately began fighting to give him every opportunity possible. Cam started physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, music therapy, aquatic therapy, and more. I wanted to make sure he had access to every resource that could help him reach his full potential.

Milestones that many children reach naturally required an incredible amount of hard work for Cam. He didn’t sit independently until he was one year old. He didn’t begin crawling until around two and a half, and he didn’t walk independently until he was four. Throughout his journey, he has needed various devices and assistance to help him accomplish things that others might take for granted.

But Cam has never stopped working.

Today, he is in first grade in an adaptive classroom at a public school, and he absolutely loves it! He is nonverbal, but he babbles throughout the day and has developed his own ways of communicating his wants and needs. He recently received a communication device that he has been working with, opening up even more opportunities for him to express himself and connect with the world around him.

Therapy has made an incredible difference in Cam’s life, and watching his progress has taught me more about determination, patience, and celebrating the little things than I could ever put into words.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as Cam’s mom is that, when you are navigating a rare genetic disorder, you have to be your child’s biggest advocate. There were many times when I felt dismissed, when my concerns weren’t taken seriously, and when I was told to simply wait and see how he progressed over the years.

But waiting without answers wasn’t good enough for me.

I changed doctors more times than I can count and went through three different doctors before finally receiving Cam’s diagnosis. I kept asking questions, pushing for answers, and searching for someone who would listen. Thankfully, we found a neurologist who continued investigating until we finally had an answer.

My message to other parents is this: Trust your instincts. Ask questions. Advocate relentlessly. If a doctor doesn’t have the answers or dismisses your concerns, keep searching for someone who will listen. You know your child, and you have every right to fight for the answers and support they deserve.

When Cam was younger, I was told he would never even lift his head on his own. Today, he is walking, attending school, communicating in his own ways, and continuing to accomplish things that once seemed impossible to the people who predicted his future.

Cam is doing so many of the things we were told he would never do.

His journey has not been easy, and we still have challenges ahead of us. But Cam reminds me every day that a diagnosis does not define a child’s potential. Progress may look different for every child, and it may take longer, require more support, and come with obstacles others never see. But every milestone matters. Every accomplishment deserves to be celebrated.

I hope that by sharing Cam’s story, other families affected by CHAMP1 will feel less alone. I hope they find encouragement to keep advocating, keep seeking answers, and keep believing in their children. I also hope stories like Cam’s help raise awareness, encourage research, and bring us closer to better understanding CHAMP1 and improving the lives of the individuals and families affected by it.

Cam is so much more than his diagnosis. He is truly the happiest, sweetest little boy, and he is absolutely loving life! Despite all the challenges he has faced, he continues to bring so much joy and love to the people around him. His determination is incredible, but it’s his sweet spirit and happiness that make him so special. He reminds me every day to celebrate the little things, find joy in the moment, and never take a single milestone for granted. Cam has been through more in his little life than most people will ever know, yet he continues to show the world just how much happiness, love, and light one little boy can bring into it.
